The Oxbridge Difference

What does Oxbridge mean? Is it an international organization?

The name Oxbridge is an amalgamation of names of two famous universities of South London – Oxford and Cambridge. These universities are famous worldwide for English language and literature. The name Oxbridge is synonymous with the English language learning which is imparted to the students. The teaching methodology at Oxbridge focuses on learning the target language by speaking the language, without translating it to one's native language. Founded in 1993, it has grown to become a national network of almost 30 language centers throughout the country (India).

What is Oxbridge's METHODOLOGY?

Our teaching method is unique and interesting. Our methodology embarks upon the philosophy that it’s no better way to learn a language than to SPEAK in the language. Students in Oxbridge are encouraged to speak more than the teachers, our classes consist of a small number of students, the teachers are well trained and experienced in the Oxbridge method of teaching and we focus on primarily on speaking the language rather than writing it. Vocabulary is another aspect with is given utmost importance as the students are asked to use the words they learn while they have any spoken activity.

How is the Oxbridge's METHODOLOGY of teaching unique?

At Oxbridge, we not only help our students to speak in English but also work towards instilling the confidence that is required to speak the language. Our method not only improves a student's oral communication or speaking skills but also allows the student to continually improve via his/her sense of confidence in the language.

In class the students learn by speaking and listening. They are encouraged to participate in 'real life' activities, role-plays and discussions where they are required to speak as well as listen to their colleagues and instructors. This gives them a chance to apply what they are learning and prepares them to face similar situations in the real world confidently. The Oxbridge method is also significantly different from the lecture method since 70% of the class time is spent in speaking in English. Our primary focus is not on reading and writing during the class as the students are required to work on these skills at home through the Oxbridge materials given to them when they register for a course.

Are you affiliated to any university? Are Oxbridge courses recognized?

Oxbridge Levels correspond to that of the European standards and with 30 Centers across the country, Oxbridge is recognized the world over. In India, we are not affiliated to any university, which also allows us to customize our courses keeping in mind the dynamic work environment. It provides us freedom to mould our courses as per the requirement of students.

Our Certification Levels

What do the various levels signify?

The various levels signify a person's ability to comprehend and speak the language correctly and effectively in various situations i.e. the command or fluency he/she has in the language. At Oxbridge we refer to them as the Oxbridge Levels.

Level 1-Foundation signifies that one is a beginner and has basic command to deal with his/her basic everyday situation.

Level 2-Fluency signifies limited command over the language i.e. along with everyday situations, one can deal with situations that he/she is familiar with or has dealt with earlier.

Level 3-OCC signifies an effective command over the language i.e. apart from the basic everyday and familiar situations, to a certain extent one can deal with new situations which he/she is facing for the first time.

Level 4-ACC signifies a good command of language in fair number of situations.

The various levels signify a person's ability to comprehend and speak the language correctly and effectively in various situations i.e. the command or fluency he/she has in the language. At Oxbridge we also refer to them as the Oxbridge Levels.

Do you cover grammar and vocabulary also?

We do cover grammar and vocabulary but only in the context of usage. We neither introduce grammatical terms and theory nor analyze the various meanings of a word. We simply stress on how to use the grammar and vocabulary in different contexts. We teach the students how to use the language to express themselves in different 'real life' situations, not the rules of its grammar and meanings of words. Our primary focus is on the fluency of the spoken language, i.e. whatever you speak; Speak it Correctly and Confidently.

What is the duration of a particular level? How long will it take to commence classes?

Level 1- Foundation 150 hrs
Level 2- Fluency 150 hrs
Level 3- OCC 100 hrs
Level 4- ACC 100 hrs

Classes start as soon as we have enough registrations for a particular Level and your preferred time slot. Since we focus on small groups, it usually doesn't take too long to commence a course.

Is the student required to do all the levels? How much time will it take to cover all the levels? Can we pay in lump sum for all the levels – from Level 1 to 4?

It is not mandatory for every student to do all the levels. When the prospective student approaches us, we do an intensive assessment of his/her current Level of ability in the language. Based on that we recommend a Level. Therefore, all the students do not start from Level 1. If the student wishes to do particular course we charge only for that level. After a student completes a level, based on his ability and satisfaction, he can register for the next level. We don't accept lump sum amounts for more than one level. Typically, it takes approx. three months to cover a single Level at Oxbridge. But this duration is likely to vary since every student does not have the same Level of motivation and language ability. Some may take longer while some may be able to master the same comfortably in the stipulated time period. So it is very difficult to say how long it would take for a student to complete all the levels (assuming he/she is a beginner).

Learning English

What is the benefit of learning English?

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and has acquired the status of being the language of international communication. It is the most likely to be the common factor between two people from opposite sides of the world who have nothing in common with each other and yet must interact, for business or otherwise. It is the language of business communication, and in a globalized world, where business alliances are formed across countries between people of different cultural and language backgrounds, it is a necessity. On a more general level, it is the most 'alive' language of the 21st century and is essential to get any first hand account of the growth of ideas and human potential.

What is so special about learning it from Oxbridge?

The Oxbridge Method of teaching is very different from the conventional method. In the conventional method the stress is on explaining things and the teacher ends up doing most of the talking but we at Oxbridge are very well aware of the fact that a language can be learnt only by speaking, language is not maths or history where one can memorize formulas and dates. Our objective is to make the students speak and that's how they learn.

What benefits can one gain after doing a particular level?

Each Level has its own benefits. For example, after doing a Level you would have a limited command of English in familiar situations, like, recognize basic formal and informal language, confirm and change travel plans, understand and give simple instructions, suggest and recommend, complain and apologize, etc.

What are the job-prospects after doing a course?

One of the major reasons for not clearing Interviews and Group Discussions is the lack of confidence because of poor communication skills in English. This problem of lack of confidence is taken care of during the entire tenure of the student at Oxbridge. The student is made to talk a lot and this way he/she is groomed to overcome his/her hesitation of speaking English. We believe that the best way to tackle your fear is to take it head on.

What is the right Level for a Call Center job?
